The Photographic Collection and Mediatheque
conserves photographic works made between the 1890s and the 1970s. Most of the
works made by the students of the Photographic Department which was founded by
József Pécsi in 1914 in the Metropolitan Municipal Technical Drawing School.
This was the first state photographic department in Hungary, where photography
was regarded as not only a profession but as an independent artistic activity
as well. The part of the remained historical photographs from the first half of
the 20th century can be found now in the Historical Photograpic Collection of
the Hungarian National Museum.
The other part of the collection consists of the photographs taken on different artworks ordered by the Hungarian government for diplomatic purposes, made in the studios of the Metropolitan Municipal Technical Drawing School during the 1920s–1940s. These photographs depict metalworks, ceramics and textiles from this period. The activities of these applied arts ateliers of the first half of the 20th century can be reconstructed on the basis of these photographic pieces. |
The third part of the collection consists of the photographic albums from the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, which document the official participation of the Metropolitan Municipal Technical Drawing School in the different world exhibitions. Furthermore, such photographic albums can be found here which document the construction of Budapest at the turn of the century and can be regarded as curiosities of history of architecture.
Among the professors of the Photographic Department were such remarkable personages of the Hungarian photography as József Pécsi (1889–1956), Rudolf Járai (1913–1993), Kata Kálmán (1909–1978) and Klára Langer (1912–1973). Database of the Photographic Collection and Mediatheque |
